What are the ages of the actors who appear in Everyday Speech videos?

We understand the diverse nature of caseloads means not every piece of content we put out is going to be applicable to everyone. That said, we have a huge library of content, with items specifically created for all different age groups, ranging from Kindergarten through High School. 


For your reference, the actors in our videos are aged 12-18. We have videos for all types of learners, ranging from very short, simple, straightforward videos aimed at introductory learners, to more nuanced social situations in our Social Skills in Action and Activities types. We've built out our platform to fit a wide range of needs and abilities, and feel that we have material for every student on your caseload.


Who is the Social Learning Platform (SLP) for?

The Social Learning Platform was created for anyone working on social-emotional learning or social skills including learners across diagnoses. Professionals include:

  • District-wide Social-Emotional Curriculum
  • Speech-Language Pathologists
  • Social Workers/Psychologists
  • Teachers (Regular and Special Education)
  • Applied-Behavior Analysts
  • Guidance/Adjustment Counselors
  • Parents

Students of all ages can use the materials, however, we recommend that students have a moderate understanding/ foundation of language abilities to benefit from the dialogue used in our video lessons and printable materials.


What type of teaching content is included in the Social Learning Platform?

Videos


All video lessons employ video modeling to directly teach social skills to a variety of ages and cognitive levels.



Video Modeling:
Modeling Video Lessons teach basic social communication skills through video modeling of the target behavior. Intended for younger or beginning level students, each lesson teaches a single skill in a concise style using simple language. Students watch the target skill modeled multiple times in order to gain an understanding of how to demonstrate it. These lessons are only minutes long, so we recommend viewing multiple times for extra review!


Social Skills in Action (SSIA):
Using contrasting behaviors and thought bubbles, SSIA videos help students understand perspectives, emotions, and thoughts. Best suited for students with a moderate understanding of language, they contain more dialogue than Modeling Videos and are longer in length (videos run three to five minutes long). Natural pauses are built into the lessons to encourage users to stop and reflect on the video's discussion prompts.


Extension Lessons:
Watch your students apply what they've learned by completing tasks designed to help identify emotions, actions, and cause-and-effect across a variety of contexts. Our Extension Lessons promote real-life social interactions and problem solving skills. These lessons are compilations of video scenes put together for fun review or reward activities. Longer in length, they run about ten to twenty minutes with opportunities for longer discussions or quick review.




Activities


In addition to offering a companion worksheet for every single video lesson, we offer three different types of printable activities for added fun and review!


Premium Activity Packets:
These in-depth packets provide multiple games or activities related to the overall goal including board games, card games, and scenario-based activities. The packets also contain a review worksheet, homework activity, and a poster containing visual teaching concepts.


One-Page Review:
Using a variety of formats, these one-page worksheets complement the lessons, providing both a review and a way to check comprehension of skills. Worksheet formats include Matching, Sorting, Fill in the Blank, Spinner, and Question & Answer and vary across skill levels to provide material for all ages.


Quick Activities:
Quick Activities provide quick lesson ideas, prompts, and strategies to implement into your sessions. Categorized by the Everyday Speech goals and difficulty levels, these Quick Activities can be used to introduce or reinforce skills you’re targeting in tandem with our video lessons and other therapy materials!




Games


Our collection of online games provide even more opportunities to work on the same Social Skills as our videos and printable lessons, in fun and interactive ways!


Our online games make for the perfect review activity because students can work on multiple therapy targets while practicing real-world social interaction. All games encourage communication and cooperation between peers. Online games can be used for the bulk of a session or as a quick review or reward activity. Students can partake in cooperative or team-based play; our games are equipped with multiple settings to individualize learning and ensure the most fun and learning possible!


How we define the Level of a learner

Not sure if your child or student is emergent, intermediate, or advanced? Here's how Brittany, our co-founder and resident Speech Language Pathologist, thinks about the levels when creating materials.




Our materials are categorized into three difficulty levels. The descriptions below give some guidance around selecting what is right for your child or student. Please be aware that every child is different and may not fit perfectly into a description below. In that case, we suggest trying out different levels of materials to find lessons that are the best match. Ideally these lessons will challenge your child and help them grow but are not too difficult.


Emergent: This may be a good place to start if your learner is below the age of 7, has limited cognitive abilities, or is brand new to a skill (i.e. it’s the first time they’ve started to work on it).


Intermediate: This level of material may be best for your learner if they are within the ages of 7-13, are able to perform a skill with some help but not on their own, or have been working on a skill for some time and are ready for the next level of difficulty.


Advanced: This level would be best for learners older than 13, are ready to be challenged by a skill, and can perform the skill with a small amount of help, or on their own in some settings but not in all. For example, an individual may understand when adults use sarcasm but have trouble understanding when peers are sarcastic.

 


How are the materials broken into different age groups?

Materials are labeled as either Pre-K-Elementary or Middle-High school based on the difficulty of the skills covered, the age of the actors, and the vocabulary. Scenes are written to be reflective of the intended age group. We often hear that students relate to the actors on screen, which is a powerful benefit of using same-age actors for the intended age groups.

Are your materials appropriate for certain age groups?

Everyday Speech materials are appropriate for learners from preschool up until high school and beyond. We recommend that learners have a strong understanding of language in order for them to follow any social skills/social-emotional curriculum. Our videos and printable activities contain dialogue and language that is required for students to maximize the benefits of our platform. 


However, there are plenty of suggested ways to scaffold the materials or modify them to bolster students’ comprehension. We suggest pre-teaching/previewing the material before introducing lessons, watching video lessons multiple times, and utilizing visual and/or written supports.


Is Everyday Speech backed by evidence-based studies?
Our materials are all written by licensed nationally board-certified Speech Language Pathologists and are based on the tenants of video modeling, which is the gold-standard in interventions for social skills. 


Video Modeling is an evidence-based strategy using video recordings to model a desired skill. This technique has been shown to quickly improve and maintain new social skills. Our videos teach a full array of social competencies to improve school adjustment, cope with the ever-changing social environment, navigate emotions, make informed social decisions to solve problems, and understand prescribed social rules.

We developed our teaching method based on the following underlying skills needed to succeed socially and emotionally: understanding theory of mind, predicting multivariate outcomes, and recognizing social consequences. While there are no published studies using out materials at this moment (we are working with several universities but the studies have not been completed yet) video modeling is a teaching practice backed by over twenty years of research. Are there materials that are appropriate for low-incidence students?

We recommend that learners have a strong understanding of language, in order for them to follow any social skills/social-emotional curriculum. Our videos and printable activities contain dialogue/language that is required for students to maximize the benefits of our platform. 

 

A good rule of thumb is that children who show an interest in people and an interest in interacting can benefit from a social skills curriculum. Those who do not show very much interest in friendship or people, due to the severity of their diagnosis, or type of diagnosis, do not make therapeutically efficacious gains.

Is Everyday Speech right for my students?

Students of all ages can use the materials, however, we recommend that students have a moderate understanding/foundation of language abilities to benefit from the dialogue used in our video lessons and printable materials.


Does the Social Learning Platform offer progress monitoring tools?

While the Social Learning Platform does not provide an online progress monitoring tool that tracks student data, we do offer the following tools to be used for goal planning or Individualized Education Plan (IEP) reviews:

  • A developmental curriculum including lesson bundles - this may be helpful for planning long-term therapy, writing IEP goals, and progress notes.
  • Goal Summaries and Posters can be used for goal writing. We provide printable PDFs of all Skills & Goals within our curriculum.

Does the Social Learning Platform have answer keys for its printable activities?

The Social Learning Platform was designed to have open-ended questions and thus encourage self reflection (e.g. how would you feel, how you would react) and as such, there is no right and wrong answers for these questions. 


For other questions like sorting and matching, we trust the clinician’s judgment to identify correct answers.

My school already has a Social-Emotional Learning curriculum, how does this fit in?

The Social Learning Platform is a great addition to any current curriculum because it comes with so many materials and covers such a wide range of skills and goals. Use the video lessons, games, or printables as supplemental materials - we’re confident these will enhance or fit in all with the target learning areas of existing curriculums.

I have a child with significant emotional needs. I’m concerned this curriculum isn’t enough.

No curriculum can replace the value of individual therapy with certified therapists and the techniques they offer. Our curriculum is geared for academic and classroom success and can help shape behaviors that are specifically seen in the classroom as well as replace old ways of thinking with new, more productive ways of thinking.

Can I use Everyday Speech in Teletherapy?

Yes, you can certainly incorporate Everyday Speech in your teletherapy practice! In fact, many telepractice clinicians utilize our materials.  


We suggest sharing your screen to play videos or to go through digital activities like worksheets with your students. All printable materials are downloadable as well, which allows you to download materials ahead of time to share with your students. Be sure to allow audio settings so your students can hear the sounds of video lessons and games on their end. If you’re able to share control of the mouse, that may be useful in certain cases too. If you cannot share mouse control, we suggest using this as opportunities to work on expressive language or functional communication by having your student direct you through games!

Do I need training? / Do you offer training?

The Social Learning Platform has been designed to be extremely easy to use and user-friendly. All lessons are bundled in an easy-to-follow and ordered curriculum with clear user instructions on every single material. Our support center offers training videos and tutorials, and we have customer support ready to go 8 hours a day, 5 days a week!
